They were evidence of preparation, discipline, and a willingness to put in the effort required to succeed.

There wasn’t much room for excuses.

If I committed to something, I was expected to follow through.

If I made a mistake, I was expected to take responsibility for it.

And if I wanted to accomplish something difficult, I needed to be willing to do the work.

I didn’t always appreciate those expectations when I was younger.

There were certainly times when I would have preferred to relax, take an easier course, or spend less time studying.

But looking back, I recognize that my parents were preparing me for something much more important than getting good grades.

They were helping me develop the habits and character needed to take responsibility for my own future.

More Than Academic Success

Throughout high school, academics were a major priority.

I worked hard to maintain strong grades, challenge myself academically, and make the most of the opportunities available to me.

Graduating as salutatorian was an accomplishment I was proud of, but it also represented years of encouragement, expectations, and support from my family.

My parents taught me that academic achievement opens doors, but character determines what you do once those doors are open.

They expected honesty, dependability, and respect for others.

They also believed that success comes with an obligation to contribute something positive to the world around you.

Those lessons became increasingly important as I began thinking about college and the kind of life I wanted to build.

West Point offered something different from a traditional university.

It combined academic excellence with physical challenges, military leadership development, and a commitment to serving the country.

That combination appealed to me because it reflected many of the values I had grown up with.

Learning Responsibility Through Work

Some of the most valuable lessons I learned before West Point came from working.

I started working in the restaurant industry while I was still in high school, eventually taking on greater responsibilities in the kitchen.

Working in a restaurant teaches you things that can’t always be learned in a classroom.

You have to show up on time.

You have to work with people who may have different personalities and approaches.

You have to perform under pressure, solve problems quickly, and understand that your decisions affect the entire team.

When things get busy, there’s not much time for excuses.

Everyone has a job to do, and the team depends on each person doing their part.

As I took on more responsibility, I began to appreciate that leadership isn’t simply about telling people what to do.

It’s about setting an example, being dependable, and helping the people around you succeed.

Those experiences gave me a practical introduction to many of the leadership principles I’m now studying at West Point.

Service Begins in Your Community

My parents also encouraged me to understand the importance of giving back.

Growing up, I had opportunities to participate in community service projects, including highway cleanups, dictionary distributions to elementary school students, and fundraising activities supporting local charitable efforts.

Those experiences helped me see that service doesn’t always require a dramatic gesture.

Sometimes it means giving up a Saturday morning to pick up litter along a highway.

Sometimes it means helping younger students or supporting an event that raises money for a good cause.

The individual activities may seem small, but they contribute to something larger.

I learned that strong communities depend on people who are willing to contribute their time and effort without expecting recognition.

That lesson connects directly to what I’m learning at West Point.

Service isn’t simply something you talk about.

It’s something you demonstrate through your actions.

My Younger Sister: My Biggest Competitor

Of course, no story about my upbringing would be complete without mentioning my younger sister, Rosemary.

Rosemary is four years younger than me, a dedicated athlete, and one of the most competitive people I know.

She has a pretty simple philosophy when it comes to her older brother:

Anything Roy can do, Rosemary can do better.

And she fully intends to prove it.

Rosemary is passionate about volleyball and puts an incredible amount of energy into improving her skills and competing at a high level.

Like me, she grew up with parents who place a strong emphasis on academics, discipline, and personal responsibility.

But Rosemary has never been particularly interested in simply following in my footsteps.

She wants to create her own path, establish her own accomplishments, and, whenever possible, surpass whatever I’ve achieved.

Having a younger sister who treats nearly everything as a competition can be entertaining.

It can also be motivating.

Our sibling rivalry has always had a good-natured side, but behind it is a shared understanding that accomplishments have to be earned.

I know Rosemary works hard to become a better athlete and student, and I respect that determination.

I hope my journey at West Point encourages her to pursue ambitious goals of her own.

If she eventually decides that West Point is the right path for her, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Of course, she’ll probably insist on earning better grades, outperforming me physically, and finding some way to prove that she can do everything her older brother did, only better.

And while I might not admit it to her directly, I’d be proud to see her succeed.

One thing I’ve learned from having Rosemary as my younger sister is that setting a good example matters.

Whether I intended to or not, I’ve had someone watching what I do, learning from my successes and mistakes, and occasionally deciding that whatever I accomplished wasn’t quite good enough for her.

That gives me another reason to keep challenging myself.

Patriotism and Personal Responsibility

My parents raised me to appreciate the opportunities available in the United States and to respect the principles on which our country was founded.

They taught me that freedom comes with responsibility and that citizenship means more than simply enjoying the benefits of living in America.

It means respecting the Constitution, understanding the importance of public service, and recognizing the sacrifices made by previous generations.

Our family’s conservative values emphasized individual responsibility, limited reliance on excuses, respect for institutions, and the belief that people should contribute positively to their communities.

Those beliefs helped shape my interest in military service.

But one of the things I’m learning at West Point is that serving the country means serving all Americans, regardless of their backgrounds, beliefs, or political views.

As future Army officers, our commitment is to the Constitution and the responsibilities entrusted to us.

I believe the values I learned at home provide a strong foundation for that obligation.

From Family Expectations to West Point Standards

One of the interesting things about arriving at West Point is discovering how familiar some of the expectations feel.

The Academy demands academic preparation, personal discipline, physical fitness, integrity, and accountability.

Those standards are challenging, but the underlying principles weren’t entirely new to me.

My parents had been emphasizing many of them for years.

The difference is that West Point takes those expectations and places them in the context of military leadership.

Doing well in school is no longer simply about personal academic success.

Physical fitness isn’t just about individual athletic performance.

Being dependable isn’t only about meeting family expectations.

All of these things contribute to preparing us to lead soldiers and accept responsibilities that will eventually affect other people’s lives.

That gives the work a greater sense of purpose.

What I’m Learning About Leadership

Before coming to West Point, I often thought of leadership in terms of achievement, responsibility, and setting a good example.

I still believe those things are important.

But I’m beginning to understand that leadership also requires humility, patience, and the ability to learn from others.

Being academically successful doesn’t mean you have all the answers.

Being placed in a leadership position doesn’t automatically mean you’ve earned everyone’s respect.

And being confident in your abilities doesn’t eliminate the need to listen, adapt, and recognize your own weaknesses.

At West Point, I’m surrounded by talented people who have accomplished impressive things before arriving at the Academy.

That’s a good reminder that there’s always room to improve.

My goal is to continue working hard academically while developing the judgment, character, and interpersonal skills needed to become an effective Army officer.

The Family Behind the Cadet

When I think about the opportunity I’ve been given, I recognize how much my family has contributed to helping me reach this point.

My parents set high expectations, encouraged me to challenge myself, and taught me to take responsibility for my decisions.

They also provided the support and opportunities that allowed me to pursue ambitious goals.

I’m grateful for that.

And I’m grateful for Rosemary, whose competitive spirit has a way of keeping me humble and reminding me that someone back home is always ready to challenge whatever I accomplish.

My family’s influence doesn’t end simply because I’m now at West Point.

The values I learned growing up continue to shape the decisions I make, the goals I set, and the kind of person I want to become.

Carrying Those Values Forward

As a member of West Point’s Class of 2029 and Company A-4, the Apaches, I know I’m still at the beginning of a demanding journey.

There will be difficult courses, challenging training, setbacks, and experiences that test my abilities and character.

I won’t always get everything right.

But I intend to keep learning, take responsibility for my mistakes, and work to become better every day.

The values I brought from home won’t guarantee success at West Point.

Success will still require hard work, discipline, humility, and perseverance.

But those values have given me a foundation I can build upon.

My parents taught me the importance of responsibility.

My experiences in school and at work taught me the value of preparation and teamwork.

My community taught me the importance of service.

And my sister Rosemary taught me that no matter what I accomplish, someone will always be ready to challenge me to do better.

West Point is now helping me bring those lessons together as I prepare for a future of military leadership.

I’m proud of where I came from.

I’m grateful for the people who helped me get here.

And I’m looking forward to seeing where the next four years take me.

The values I brought from home helped me get to West Point. The challenge now is to live up to them and continue growing into the person and leader I want to become.

Roy Heath
USMA Class of 2029
Company A-4 — Apaches

Beat Navy!

By Roy Heath | USMA Class of 2029 | Company A-4 Apaches When people learn that I’m a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point, they sometimes focus on the Academy’s reputation, its demanding academic standards, or the military career that follows graduation.
